Melina Jackson preps her rocket for launch. She was one of the eighth graders at the Henniker Community School who recently launched the model rockets they built in tech education class. Students participated in an interdisciplinary unit in five classes: tech education, math, science, English language arts and social studies. Students learned about the science of rocketry, including Newton’s Laws of Motion. During the launch, students collected data in order to calculate the miles per hour speed of each rocket and to calculate the height of the rocket using a formula from trigonometry. This integrated unit allowed the eighth graders to examine space in multiple ways, providing them with a more complete understanding of the topic.
