Deering: Highway department wants new truck

Wednesday, March 15, 2017

Hot topic: Purchase of a new truck for the highway department is a big-ticket item at town meeting this year. The vehicle, equipped with a plow, has a high price tag, town clerk Carol Baker said, so the town would use $80,339 from the Highway Vehicle Capital Reserve Fund and look toward the town to raise the remaining $114,661.

Budget: The proposed operating budget is $2.02 million, up from $1.99 million from last year.

Noteworthy articles: Deering’s select board will introduce a per diem emergency responder program to voters with the hopes of a sum of $45,000 to be raised for the staffing and creation of an ambulance. For many reasons, Deering’s ambulance has struggled to respond to many calls recently.

Approval of Article 7 would staff an ambulance Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Future costs of the per diem paramedic program would be included in the town operating budget. The article would not raise any new taxes and would have no effect on the tax rate.

When and where: The town meeting will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at Deering Town Hall.
