As cars began lining the roadway and bundled spectators took their place next to the wide, snowy track, dogs yapped and howled in anticipation: they were about to race.

The 88th Laconia World Championship Sled Dog Derby began this past Friday, and it ends today. Laconia Country Club is the official place to watch the mushers, but the field across from Belknap County Jail is also popular.

There, by weaving between trucks and sled harnesses, you could get up close to some furry, excited world-class athletes: the dogs.
