Slain student’s mom in NY warns of date violence
Sponsors of a daylong program in New York City want to raise awareness of dating violence.
Sharon Love says dating violence wasn’t even on her radar nearly four years ago when her college-age daughter was killed. Her daughter’s ex-boyfriend was convicted and is serving a 23-year prison term. The two had played lacrosse at college in Virginia.
Love and others panelists spoke last week as part of the public-awareness push organized by Break the Cycle. The Los Angeles-based group works to stop date abuse.
Olympic gold medal gymnast Jordyn Wieber, another panelist, said she has two sisters she wants to be safe, as well as teammates, friends and fans.
Break the Cycle is encouraging parents to talk with their teens about healthy relationships and is offering suggestions online at breakthecycle.org.
