The Insiders: A Taylor-made day in Concord
Coif your neatly trimmed flattop and break out your finest Coogi sweater over collared shirt combo – it’s Meshach Taylor’s birthday! As everyone clearly already knows, Taylor is the Emmy-nominated actor who portrayed Anthony Bouvier on the hit sitcom Designing Women. (We’re not sure why we wasted time with that introduction since he is a household name, but there you go.) In honor of his 66th birthday, we’ve planned the perfect Taylor-themed day in Concord.
Of course, Taylor’s signature character, Bouvier, was a former inmate wrongfully imprisoned for a robbery he did not commit. With that in mind, stop down at Corrections Creations (312 N. State St.) and check out the inmate-made goods. The ladies down at Sugarbaker’s Design would have loved all the cool wooden furniture!
Next, head over to Cole Gardens (430 Loudon Road) to pay tribute to Taylor’s HGTV series The Urban Gardener by picking up some plants – just in time for spring! The flowers there are almost as colorful as Taylor’s trademark flamboyant sweaters.
As his character Bouvier, Taylor traveled a character arc that carried him from a lowly deliveryman to a partner in the design firm and eventually to become a lawyer. Perhaps you’ll brush elbows with the next Bouvier as you swing by the UNH School of Law (2 White St.) and take a peek at the student art exhibit on display. The oils, woodcarvings and photos you’ll see would look great in any swanky suburban Atlanta-area home.
Finally, finish off your day by heading over to any of Concord’s bars and ordering that famous Designing Women-inspired drink: the Delta Burke. The bartender will know what you’re talking about. (Note: That is almost definitely not true.) It’s basically vodka, peaches and chocolate syrup. Bottoms up!
