Prepare for a scare, Concord – tonight, the granddaddy of modern horror flicks, The Evil Dead, plays at Red River Theatres. Way before the 2013 remake (and before last year’s Cabin in the Woods, which, let’s face it, is at least 50 percent the same movie), 1981’s Evil Dead became a cult classic that would spawn thousands of imitators. Director Sam Raimi’s work on this film is the stuff of legend; on set, you might have found him running through a swamp with a homemade Steadicam fashioned out of branches, or poking at lantern-jawed star Bruce Campbell’s leg injury (sustained while filming) to force him to emote. (Where that creativity was when Raimi was making Spiderman 3 is beyond the scope of our knowledge.) The old adage tells us never to judge a book by its cover; whoever thought up that old saw obviously never encountered the Naturon Demonto. The screening is at 10 p.m. at Red River Theatres; for more information, visit redrivertheatres.org.

Pre-emptively burn off those popcorn calories at the annual Art Walk, your chance to get an early look at the artwork up for grabs at the annual Friends Program Auction (coming May 3). Meet up at the Concord Co-op today at 4 p.m. (wine tasting!) and grab a gallery map before setting out to the various downtown locations. Try to hit every stop on the tour (taking time to stop and smell the watercolor roses, of course), which culminates at Merrimack County Savings Bank with a 6 p.m. reception.
