The Insiders: Sing Happy Birthday to Engelbert Humperdinck
Concord Insider's Ben Conant and Keith Testa (SAMANTHA GORESH / Monitor staff)
Some words are just naturally funny. Mukluk. Slangwhanger. Spurnelflurtzen. All these hilarious words pale in comparison to what should be considered the greatest name in the history of the spoken word: Engelbert Humperdinck. Humperdinck was born (with the less flamboyant moniker of Arnold Dorsey) on this very day 77 years ago. If he were alive today – and we’re being told that he is – we think he’d find plenty to do today in Concord. Join us, Humperdinckers, for an Engelbert-inspired tour of Concord!
Throughout his career, Humperdinck has been equally at home in an ascot, velour pajamas or a leather vest. We’re sure he would love to take part in today’s Chamber of Commerce/Concord Young Professionals Network event: Dress for Success! Two fashion consultants will be on hand to give attendees tips on how to make a good first impression through your attire. (Like we said yesterday: yoga pants!) Brown-bag it at this Lunch & Learn event and engage in a lively discussion (chew and swallow first, please). The event is free and takes place at the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce (49 S. Main St.) from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, visit concordnhchamber.com or call 224-2508.
There’s no way Humperdinck could have recorded his 1996 classic “Lesbian Seagull” without a good sense of humor. So, we think he’d have a great time getting his sides split by the comedic stylings of Robbie Printz. The artist currently known as Printz headlines the Purple Pit’s comedy night tonight; tickets are $15, doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the show begins at 8:30 p.m. Remember, the Purple Pit is BYOB, so don’t forget to bring along a couple of Engelbert Humperdrinks, too.
