If you spend most of your Friday nights hanging out in inflatable bouncy houses and eating hamburgers in the middle of the street, this might be a routine kickoff to the weekend for you, but for the rest of us, tonight’s Concord Family YMCA Fun Family Friday Block Party is going to be the place to be.

How many times have you tried to throw a party in the middle of Warren Street, only to have it thwarted by the dangers of oncoming traffic and the logistics of grilling in a traveled lane? Those are all problems of the past, as the street will be shut down to everything but fun beginning at 5:15 p.m. The evening will feature carnival games – sadly, though, not our suggestion of “spray paint your own parking space on Main Street” – as well as a bounce house and dinner for the entire family. It’s also free, which according to our financial advisers makes it a budget-friendly good time for everyone.

As you can no doubt remember from the last time you grilled food for a few hundred of your closest friends, having enough buns is always a concern. So give the YMCA a call to let them know you are coming, especially if you are bringing the whole fam’, at 228-9622. The festivities will wrap up at 7:30 p.m. Members and nonmembers are welcome.

You can take about an hour to digest before heading over to Makris Lobster and Steak House for an 8:30 p.m. performance by acoustic rock band Bend the Ride, which is a great name for a band but bad advice for your commute home. Though they won’t be playing inside a bouncy house – that’s just a guess, really – they will be playing acoustic versions of popular rock music, which we can only presume includes titles like “The Wheels on the Bus” and “The Itsy Bitsy Spider.” More likely actual covers might include songs by Neil Young, The Cars, The Goo Goo Dolls and the Foo Fighters.
