The Insiders: Don’t forget what Deep Purple once cautioned America
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky! Just as the great minds in Deep Purple (or was it Foghat? Or Bachman Turner Overdrive? Does it really matter?) once cautioned America, there is going to be smoke over the Merrimack River today. Weekend on the Water, Concord’s fun new fall festival, starts today, and here there be dragon boats! Teams of 22 will race their long, ornate dragon boats down the river in the hottest dragon action this side of the Dothraki Sea. If that’s not enough for you, there will be duck boat tours (dry land on wheels only – a classic duck and roll), the Capital Cup Brew Festival and all its craft-brewed goodness, the Mad Dog urban obstacle course 5K, music, food, family fun and lots more! Admission is free; some events have varying fees. For more information, find Weekend on the Water on Facebook.
Elsewhere, the 28th annual Kiwanis car show takes place at NHTI today from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Hundreds of classic and antique cars will be on display and competing for trophies. There will also be raffles, vendors, food and entertainment by Kid Jazz. For more information, visit concordkiwanis.org.
If you’re heading to the car show, why not swing by Arnie’s and get your vintage whip washed? The Rockin’ Car Wash to benefit the Granite State Music Festival runs today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
If you feel like getting out of town, head up to Lake Winnipesaukee to check out Lakefest at Weirs Beach. There will be an attempt (featuring a large crew of Concordians) to break the Guinness World Record for largest floating raft of canoes and kayaks. For more information, visit nhlakefest.org.
