The Insiders: Take a walk among the trees today

It’s Thanksgiving eve! That’s the night when everyone gathers under the tree and opens their turkeys and takes all the stuffing out of their stockings. Wait, are we mixing holidays again? Anyway, we do have some advice for you today – grab the old shoulder pads and helmet out of the closet and borrow your kid’s shin guards. That should get you ready for a trip to the grocery store to rub elbows with a few hundred of your grumpiest friends to secure those final few ingredients for Thanksgiving dinner. Pick up some extra rolls, if you can, we’re probably going to want seconds. We are invited to Thanksgiving dinner, aren’t we?

If you want more of a leisurely stroll today, we recommend swinging by the annual “Fez”tival of Trees, sponsored by the Shriners of New Hampshire and held at the Bektash Shrine Center at 189 Pembroke Road. It’s a delightful display of Christmas trees to walk among, all decorated in different themes and arrangements. We’ve visited each of the last two years and spotted trees decorated with a variety of chocolate bars, dog toys and treats, hardware and even one with a SpongeBob theme. And the best part – one of them could be yours. Each tree has a slot for raffle tickets and winners will be drawn Dec. 1 at 4 p.m. Admission to the event is $5, $4 for seniors, and children 12 and younger are free. There’s also a silent auction (bidding closes Saturday at 4 p.m.) and refreshments from the Candy Cane Cafe.
