The Insiders: Don’t miss out on one of the great rivalries in sports
Rivalries are a big part of what make sports great. Bird vs. Magic, Brady vs. Manning, Ali vs. Frazier, Joe vs. the volcano – it’s safe to say that all but one of those are historic rivalries that played out on the sporting world’s biggest stage. Well, this afternoon you can witness the rekindling of another such classic clash: the Capital Wheelers vs. the All-Stars.
Today is the 12th annual Wheelchair Basketball Benefit at NHTI to honor the legacy of student Zech DeVits, and it pits the Wheelers – Granite State Independent Living staff and NHTI students – against the All-Stars, a team made up of NHTI employees. ESPN may be too busy devoting screen time to Tim Tebow’s toothbrushing adventures this morning, but you don’t have to – head to the Goldie Crocker Wellness Center for the hottest sports show in town. The game tips off at 4 p.m.
DeVits had just graduated from NHTI in 2005 when he died at the age of 22 due to the effects of gigantism, a genetic condition he was born with. The school has hosted the game for more than a decade in his honor. Admission is by donation, and there will also be a silent auction and 50/50 raffle. Last year’s benefit raised almost $2,000, and all the proceeds (from the admission, auction and raffle) this year will once again be matched by the NHTI Student Senate to help purchase assistive technology for students with disabilities. Consider this column assistive technology to get your behind out to a great event.
Also today, author Liz O’Donnell will be appearing at Gibson’s Bookstore at 7 p.m. to discuss her book, Mogul, Mom, & Maid: The Balancing Act of the Modern Woman.
