The Insiders: We have a sixth sense that says you want to do this 4k on the 4th even though it’s the 5th
July 4, like any good American holiday, tends to be rich in things like calories and shoving grilled foods into our faces. With that comes the inevitable hangover and self-loathing the day after (depending on your situation, this phenomenon may or may not be tied to holidays only). But for all of that we have a solution, at least this time around.
And that solution is the fact that today is the annual 4K on the 4th event on the NHTI campus. If you don’t get hung up on the math (4, 5, it’s all the same really when you’re dealing with dates and Ks), you can burn some of those calories you added to your day yesterday. The event takes place on the state’s only certified 4K course, which isn’t all that surprising given that most races feature more Ks. There’s incentive to do well beyond shedding inches, too; there are 4K on the 4th pint glasses for overall and age group champs, and technical T-shirts for the first 250 entrants. And for those super literal folks wondering why they don’t put the race on the actual 4th, it’s because it turns out fireworks are difficult to run away from safely (that’s not really why).
The day also features free kids races of 400 or 800 meters. All proceeds benefit the NHTI Lynx cross country team. You can find more information, as well as photos of Steady Eddy and Bonk the Bunny, at 4konthe4th.com.
