John and Cindy Becker are offering free stays for veterans on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at their bed-and-breakfast in Sanbornton. The inn, called the Lake House at Ferry Point, is located at 100 Lower Bay Road. The couple purchased it one year ago yesterday.
The free stay is part of a larger initiative by the Professional Association of Innkeepers International. The Beckers put the information about the rooms on their website several weeks ago and all 10 rooms were booked almost immediately. Cindy spoke with the Monitor about the business and the couples’ decision to offer free rooms.
John is a veteran, right? He was in the Navy Reserves. He served from 1986 to 1991 in Madison, Wis. and St. Louis, Mo.
Why did you decide to participate? I grew up in high school during Vietnam and so we’ve always kind of had a soft spot in our heart for veterans, and we want to give them a good deal when they’re home.
How has business been since you purchased the inn? Busy, we were surprised by how busy it was all year. The people that sold it to us always closed on Halloween and opened again on Memorial Day. We’re going to run it year round.
Why did you purchase the inn? We decided it would play to our strengths. (John) loves to cook, I was an art teacher. What we fondly call our staff is our three kids. We have a 17-year-old daughter, a 15-year-old son and a 10-year-old son. They actually work like crazy over the summer.
Anything else you want to add? If the vets want to come back for the well-deserved free night and breakfast, we’re going to do it next year, too.
