The Insiders: On today’s menu? Fresh farm goods and some high school hockey

It’s Feb. 22, a day to celebrate our nation’s first president and our nation’s first dog walker. Wait, what? That’s right, it’s not only George Washington’s birthday, but it’s also Walking the Dog Day, at least according to the interwebs. Two things strike us about the latter: first, it’s a cruel joke for anyone living in the Northeast to have Walking the Dog Day fall in February, when any such walk requires 20 minutes of preparation in the form of layer application and proper footwear selection and includes an obstacle course around icebergs and slushy puddles; and two, isn’t every day Walking the Dog Day if you own a dog? We haven’t met a dog yet that can go an entire day without a stroll, with the possible exception of Snoop Dogg (who we haven’t actually met . . . as far as you know).

In terms of real things to do today, you could hit up the Winter Farmers Market, still going strong at Cole Gardens at 430 Loudon Road. It’s supposed to be a rather pleasant day (we’ll believe it when we see it), so why not make the trek for some fresh veggies and, of course, fresh donuts. The market runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

If Olympic hockey has you craving some action on the ice, we’ve got a great doubleheader in town for you today, too. The Bishop Brady boys hockey team hosts Salem High School at Everett Arena at 5:30 p.m., with the Bishop Brady-Trinity girls facing off with Souhegan at 7:30 p.m. The girls defeated Souhegan earlier this winter and are looking for the series sweep as the stretch run approaches. No medals will be awarded, but there will likely be snacks at the concession stand, so there’s that.
