The Insiders: This book is for the birds – and about them

We all have something that makes us feel better when we’re a little down. For us, it’s mostly a night of cookies, ice cream and some old episodes of Murder She Wrote.

But Robert Vallieres found his solace in birds. Those winged creatures did things for him that no medical professional could after returning home from the Persian Gulf War with a traumatic brain injury and Gulf War Syndrome. In his new book, Wounded Warriors: A Soldier’s Story of Healing through Birds, Vallieres chronicles his life transformation after seeing a newspaper ad about a bird-watching trip to see raptors in the mountains of New Hampshire all the way to his volunteering efforts with New Hampshire Audubon.

And tonight at 7, Vallieres will be at Gibson’s Bookstore (45 S. Main St.) to share excerpts from his book, sign copies and go a little more in depth into his story. We also heard there will be a bird and small raptor in attendance – just to show a little support from the bird community.

For all you teens out there, here’s your chance to help. Today at 4:30, there will be a teen advisory group meeting at the Concord Public Library to help plan for the upcoming year of teen services and it’s open to all teens in grades 6 through 12. And for the cherry on top, snacks will be provided.
