Think you have what it takes to join the likes of Robert Frost, Edgar Allen Poe and Justin Bieber as great American poets? Then don’t miss a poetry reading and open mic night at Gibson’s Bookstore, tonight at 7. Admission to the event is free.

For the record, that list of celebrated poets isn’t entirely accurate. Bieber’s from Canada.

The monthly meeting of the Poetry Society of New Hampshire is scheduled to be headlined by readings from poets Dudley Laufman and Liz Jones, but it could be headlined by you if you can find something clean that rhymes with Nantucket.

Laufman and Jones will kick things off with readings at 7 before the open mic portion of the evening begins. All are welcome, newcomers are encouraged and early arrival is the best way to ensure a spot on the open mic sign-up sheet. We’ll be signed in as Shel Goldverstein.

Never heard of Laufman or Jones? You obviously don’t read enough poetry. Laufman, a Canterbury resident, has received – and yes, this is the actual name of the honor – the New Hampshire Governor’s Award in the Arts Lifetime Achievement Folk Heritage Award. Laufman has also published five books of poetry, three of which are shorter in length than the name of the aforementioned accolade. He is also the subject of a documentary film, The Other Way Back, and has been nominated for a Pushcart Award. The Pushcart is considered the most prestigious of all cart-based honors.

The Gibson’s event listing didn’t include a bio for Jones, but if there was one we are certain it would be impressive.
