The Insiders: Can you point us to the nearest lagoon?

To the best of our knowledge, there is no black lagoon in Concord. In fact, we’re pretty sure the city is completely lagoonless. Well, if you want to get your lagoon on (is that a thing?), tonight is your opportunity, as the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Cener hosts Sci-Fi Friday with a showing of Creature From The Black Lagoon at 7 p.m.

Interesting fact No. 1: Ricou Browning, a professional swimmer and diver, was required to hold his breath underwater for up to four minutes at a time for his role of Gill Man (according to a note from IMDB, the director’s logic was that air should travel through the monster’s gills and should therefore not create air bubbles from the mouth or nose). Interesting fact No. 2: This column was written entirely underwater. Interesting fact No. 3: We made up interesting fact No. 2.

The movie, which is rated G, will show at 7 p.m., but doors open at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $10, $9 for students and seniors and $7 for children 3-12 who are accompanied by an adult. For more information, visit or check out the Discovery Center on Facebook at

Here’s an event for ladies only: a Burlesque Dance Level 2 Workshop at Let’s Dance Studio, beginning at 7 p.m. Recommendations from the studio: wear comfortable clothes, and preferably not dresses. Rules from the studio: No stilletos. To learn more, visit

Also tonight, Beauty and the Beast Jr. will be at the Concord City Auditorium at 7 p.m. as part of the Community Players of Concord Children’s Theater Project. Tickets are $13.
