The Insiders: The hottest, most explosive event yet

Get ready for one of the hottest, most explosive events we’ve ever recommended here at The Insider. We’re talking lava hot and volcanic explosive. Actually, we’re just talking lava and volcanoes. And so is Gray Warriner, who brings a travelogue, “America’s Hotspots: Our Spectacular Volcanic Legacy,” to the Concord City Auditorium as part of the Walker Lecture Series tonight at 7:30.

Explore many of the hottest spots in America, save for the underground lair where all Insider columns are conceived. Included will be the frozen summits of the Aleutian Islands, Yellowstone’s famous geysers and hot springs, and the largest rapid in the Grand Canyon, all of which share “volcanism,” according to the event’s press materials. The less popular Vulcanism is shared only by extreme Trekkies.

The event is free. For more information, call 225-6497 or 224-4285 or visit

Less hot to the touch, but equally intellectually fiery, will be an appearance by Howard Mansfield at Gibson’s Bookstore tonight at 7 to discuss his book, Dwelling in Possibility: Searching for the Soul of Shelter. The book explores what makes certain houses a home and public places so welcoming, and digs into the concept of dwelling, which creates “the soul of buildings.” If it digs deep enough, it might find the actual souls who dwell in Gibson’s and politely restock the shelves every night. Wait – it turns out that work is actually done by employees. Can’t make it? Call 224-0562 or email gibsons@totalnet to have a copy put aside to be signed for you.
