A deer that fell through the ice on Crystal Lake in Gilmanton, got a leg up from town firefighters Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called at 8:03 a.m. and found the unlucky mammal stuck in the ice about 200 yards from shore, firefighters said.

With the help of Alton firefighters, rescuers were able to reach the deer using an inflatable kayak, according to officials.

“The deer was rescued, tired, exhausted and shivering but it was last seen up and walking around,” firefighters said in a Facebook post.

The deer rescue came after wintry weather barreled through the region on Saturday. Gilmanton firefighters said that within a 13-hour span, the department responded to 10 calls, including trees down, electrical wires on trees, carbon dioxide detector calls, and a natural gas/propane leak, firefighters said.
