The start couldn’t have been much faster for the John Stark-Hopkinton boys’ ice hockey team last night at the Laconia Ice Arena. The Generals scored two goals in the first 4:53 against Belmont-Gilford. After that, it was a different story.

“We came out flying,” John Stark-Hopkinton Coach Denis Kolehmainen, “but then we started taking penalties, and you can’t do much like that.”

The Bulldogs took advantage of the Generals in the box with two power-play goals, Caleb Drouin finished with two goals and an assist, and Belmont-Gilford came back for a 5-2 win to improve to 3-0.

Robbie Ferguson, assisted by Cooper Bourque and Kyle Kolehmainen, opened the scoring just 1:39 into the game. A few minutes later, Garrett Thomas (assisted by Callahan Loos) gave the Generals (1-1-1) a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs cut that lead in half with six minutes left in the period on a goal from Daryll Cahill, assisted by Jamie Gill.

Drouin began his assault on the Generals net in the second period when he scored a power-play goal midway through the frame, assisted by Will Mahoney. The game stayed tied at 2-2 through the remainder of the period thanks in large part to the play of John Stark-Hopkinton defenseman Scott Olson and freshman goalie Josh Gagne, who finished with 29 saves.

“Josh had a good game,” Coach Kolehmainen said. “They scored five, but it could have been worse.”

Drouin broke the tie with eight minutes left in the third when he scored unassisted, and two minutes later Dylan Treamer gave the Bulldogs a 4-2 cushion when he found the back of the net on a power play, assisted by James Buckley. Cahill, with assists from Drouin and Treamer, completed the scoring with one minute left on the clock.

Calvin Davis finished with 21 saves for Belmont-Gilford.
