Police: Driver hurt after colliding with moose

Authorities say a woman allegedly driving under the influence struck a moose in Jefferson and was taken to the hospital with injuries they described as significant.

The state police said 48-year-old Maureen Couture was driving a 2005 Volkswagen Beetle and collided with the moose on Route 116 about 7 p.m. Wednesday.

She was transported to Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster and then transferred by helicopter to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. She was listed in stable condition yesterday morning.

The police said the Jefferson woman was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. A court date has not yet been set and it wasn’t known whether she had an attorney.

Her 49-year-old passenger was transported to Weeks Memorial Hospital, treated and released.

No mention of whether or not the moose was ok. Why is that?
