Sarah Hoidahl’s surreal four-month journey, which began after she bought lunch for a pair of National Guardswomen, ended this morning when she received a new car, compliments of Ellen DeGeneres.
Hoidahl received her 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport at 10 a.m. at Grappone Hyundai in Bow. DeGeneres is a popular talk-show star who will host the Oscars next month for the second time – but, sorry to say for her local fans, she was not be on the scene.
Hoidahl is a 21-year-old single mother who lives in Henniker and waitresses at the Concord Ruby Tuesday restaurant. Last October she served two Guardswomen whose pay had been cut off because of the government shutdown.
After she paid their bill, $27.75, and left them a note explaining why, word spread via the internet and eventually reached DeGeneres, who invited Hoidahl to appear at a taping of the Ellen show.
DeGeneres repaid Hoidahl the money for the tab, added a check for $10,000 and, later, surprised Hoidahl at work with a phone call and news that she was also giving her a new car.
