Man killed in Washington snowmobile accident was Northeast Credit Union CEO

Family and colleagues are mourning the death of Northeast Credit Union’s president and chief executive officer in a snowmobile accident early Saturday morning.

New Hampshire Fish and Game officials said 62-year-old Peter Kavalauskas of Dover died after hitting trees on the shore of Millen Lake in Washington about 1 a.m.

Foster’s Daily Democrat quoted relatives as saying the Kavalauskas family has had a vacation home on nearby Highland Lake for 60 years and that he knew the terrain well.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the crash is still under investigation, but that they believe speed was a contributing factor.

The accident happened just days after Kavalauskas announced he was retiring from the credit union after nearly 30 years at its helm. He joined the company as an associate manager in 1978, when it was known as Northeast Federal Credit Union. The Portsmouth-based credit union has 15 branches throughout the state.

Kavalauskas said last week he planned to spend more time with his wife, Nancy, three children and five grandchildren after his retirement, which was expected to occur once a search committee chose his successor.
