The Insiders: No Chuck Norris, but the Walker Lecture Series is back

The Walker Lecture Series trails only Walker, Texas Ranger in the pantheon of greatest three-word titles starting with Walker. We’d advocate that the Walker Lecture Series book Chuck Norris to create the greatest Walker synergy ever, but it might burn a hole in the space time continuum. Why are we talking about all of this? That’s an excellent question. Because the Walker Lecture Series is back tonight with “Texas Highways and Byways,” a travelogue by Dale Johnson at the Audi at 7:30 p.m.

Based on what we’ve heard, we don’t recommend messing with Texas, but it is cool to learn about it. In this case, that includes absorbing the fact that “when standing in El Paso, Texas, you’re closer to Los Angeles than to Texarkana on the other side of the state,” according to the lecture series website. Also featured in the presentation: Longhorns, oil, the Big Thicket (that’s Kevin Garnett’s nickname when spoken with an unusual lisp) and the Alamo. Johnson’s presentation presents Texas as a “sometimes misunderstood state,” although we think that’s largely just due to the really big hats everyone wears.

The event is free and open to everyone. For more information, visit walkerlecture.org or call 224-4285.

Also tonight, there will be a presentation at the New England College location at 62 N. Main St. called “Research on Positive Psychology: How to be Happier,” that will feature videos, research findings and tips on becoming a happier person. Tip No. 1: It’s almost not winter. We mean, that has to be true, right?

And in the music world, John Franzosa is playing at Hermanos at 6:30 p.m.
