Henniker considers two new contracts at school district meeting

Henniker school staff will see salary increases next year if residents approve a three-year teachers’ contract and a two-year support staff contract at the district’s meeting next week.

“The contracts we are bringing forward are, we think, ones that recognize the times,” said school board Chairman Gary Guzouskas. The staff has been thoughtful in salary requests, he said, and has received minimal increases in the past. Under the previous two-year contract, the support staff took no raises at all, he said.

The estimated increase for the contracts combined is just under $100,000 for the upcoming fiscal year.

The district and school staff will save money from changes to the insurance plan in the contract negotiated with the Henniker Teachers Association, Guzaouskas said. In previous teachers’ contracts, staff members were given a choice of health insurance plans, whereas the proposed contract includes a single high-deductible plan.

“It is an opportunity for the district to have some stability in what it looks at for health insurance,” he said.

The benefit of approving the contracts is maintaining quality staff, Guzouskas said.

∎ The budget: $7,067,089, up $90,452, or 1.3 percent, from this year’s operating costs. The estimated tax impact of the proposed budget and warrant articles is an increase of $0.30 per $1,000 of assessed property value.

∎ Other warrant articles: Residents will consider an article that would allow the district to retain up to 2.5 percent of unassigned money at the end of the year for an emergency fund. It’s comparable to the town’s rainy day fund, Guzouskas said.

∎ Contested elections: None.

∎ Voting: Tuesday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Henniker Community School Gymnasium, 51 Western Ave.

∎ Town meeting: Wednesday, 7 p.m., Henniker Community School Cafetorium, 51 Western Ave.
