Garden Journal: 20th annual Seacoast Home and Garden Show takes place March 29 and 30

Spring arrived on Thursday, and garden season will be coming round the corner at a fast gallop. Are you ready? What could be a better way to welcome spring than spending a day at a home and garden show with arts and crafts, music, food, heirloom seeds, garden supplies, green plants, blooming flowers and more?

The 20th annual Seacoast Home and Garden Show at the Whittemore Center in Durham will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and next Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. With its 200-plus exhibitors, the sights, smells and sounds ought to jolt us out of our zombie winter lethargy and get us inspired for a great garden season.

Carrie Barron, event producer with Beth Alles promises this show will be the best ever. Visitors will see the latest products and services for building and remodeling, kitchens and bathrooms, green living, alternative energy, aqua-gardens, landscaping, planters and pots. Plus the event will feature a gardeners’ market to buy flowers and seeds.

According to Barron, this year’s event will include a new feature: seven gardening seminars over course of the two-day event. Participants can learn about growing their own veggies and herbs or building a fairy house. (I want one of those!)

Wine tasting, anyone? Yep. You can sign up for TASTE Magazine’s “Meet the Chefs Cooking Series,” featuring some of the Seacoast’s top chefs; and of course, samples of delectable food offerings all day long.

There will also be unique crafts and vendors, 90 percent of which are New Hampshire companies. Bring your reusable shopping bag; you never know what you might find.

Tickets for the event cost $8 for adults, $6 for seniors 65 and older and $5 for children ages 6 to 16. Those 6 and younger will be admitted for free. Tickets can be purchased online or at the event. For a discount coupon and additional information about the event, log on to

What I love most about this show? The people you will meet. See you there!
