New London couple honored for volunteer work for loons, lakes
A New Hampshire couple has been honored by the Environmental Protection Agency for their work in protecting lakes and loons.
John and Kittie Wilson of New London have received the EPA’s Environmental Award for Lifetime Achievement.
They were nominated by the Loon Preservation Committee, the New Hampshire Lakes Association and Pleasant Lake Protective Association for their volunteer work.
The lakes association said in recent years, the Wilsons have been leading advocates for state legislation that bans the use and sale of lead fishing sinkers and jigs weighing 1 ounce or less, the largest known cause of New Hampshire adult loon mortality.
Under the measure signed by Gov. Maggie Hassan, the ban would take effect in three years, giving retailers time to sell the products where they are legal.
