Merchant marine veteran gets World War II medals

A World War II veteran from New Hampshire received his service medals just before Independence Day.

U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter presented Norman Sanborn with six awards yesterday, including several combat medals and bars. Sanborn served aboard U.S. Merchant Marine ships from 1945-46.

According to Shea-Porter’s office, he is active in the veteran community and often pushes others to inquire about their service medals but until recently didn’t think to research his own.

Shea-Porter thanked Sanborn for his service as she presented the medals yesterday in Rochester.
