Judge puts a hold on Vegas Block evictions
A judge has issued a temporary stay on the city’s order to empty the Vegas Block on North Main Street by noon today.
On behalf of three residents, New Hampshire Legal Assistance filed a complaint in Concord’s district court at 8 a.m. today. Citing extreme concerns with the building’s fire and life safety code violations, Concord officials posted eviction notices yesterday afternoon. Tenants were supposed to leave by noon.
While the city has said the building is unlivable based on a Wednesday inspection, the tenants have expressed fear of becoming homeless without enough notice to find new places to live.
The judge toured the building with city staff and others this morning as residents packed their belongings. He will convene court again at 1 p.m. to rule on when the evictions will take place.
