Crotched Mountain Center has ‘story’ walks

‘Story’ walks added to center’s forest trails

Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center in Greenfield has added two “story” walks to its accessible forest trails, which offer easy access to people of all abilities, including those in wheelchairs and who have difficulty walking.

Library media specialist Marlene Damery of the Crotched Mountain School said pages of a book are transformed into signs laid out on a trail. They invite people to follow the path of the pages.

“It’s a great way to build children’s interest in reading while encouraging healthy activity for both adults and children,” Damery said.

The featured stories this year are Around the Pond: Who’s Been Here? featured on the Dutton Brook Trail, and In the Woods: Who’s Been Here? on the Gregg Trail. Both are written by Lindsay Barrett George.

“The stories are colorful and interactive, offering clues on each page that relate to different animals, which allows hikers to learn more about wildlife,” said Anita Martus, a teacher at the school.
