Lester open to idea of returning to Red Sox after season

Jon Lester continues to drop hints that his days with the Red Sox may not be over.

Speaking with the Boston Herald Tuesday, Lester kept the door open for a return to Boston as a free agent this winter, even after the Red Sox dealt him to Oakland at the trade deadline.

“At the end of the season, (getting traded is) not going to change my mind about going back there if they are aggressive and competitive and do the things they say they’re going to do,” he told the Herald. “Boston is definitely a place I would go.”

Lester and the Red Sox couldn’t agree on an extension before he was traded, but the left-hander said he won’t necessarily be looking to break the bank with his new deal.

I’m not going to the highest bidder,” he said. “I’m going to the place that makes me and my family happy. If that’s Boston, it’s Boston.

“For me, I want to be comfortable. The way I look at it is, if someone gives you $170 million and someone gives you $150 million, is that $20 million really going to change your lifestyle?”
