Maine man dies after Mount Jefferson hike
Authorities said a Maine hiker has died after suffering a medical emergency while climbing New Hampshire’s Mount Jefferson.
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said 63-year-old Gregory Larson was stricken Friday afternoon near the summit of the 5,712-foot mountain. His companions performed CPR while rescue hikers and a hospital helicopter were dispatched to help.
Officials said the helicopter was unable to land on the difficult, steep terrain, but a National Guard helicopter was able to hoist the Bridgton, Maine, man off the mountain. The wildlife department said Larson died during the rescue effort.
Conservation Officer Sgt. Mark Ober said the efforts taken by Larson’s companions and rescuers on foot and by air were commendable.
