Letter: Wrong direction for Main Street

Re “Merchants wary of fee for Main Street” (Monitor front page, Oct. 18):

Let me get this straight. You have a Main Street with 15 vacant storefronts and the solution to this is to levy higher taxes and impromptu new fees! Are you really that blind or stupid? Apparently, the business failure rate on Main Street over the past 20 years hasn’t been high enough for you.

Furthermore, it will matter not whether you throw $8 million or $18 million of our money at Main Street unless you enact and enforce loitering, panhandling and vagrancy laws long overdue.

All the landscaping and fancy facades in the world will be meaningless if there’s a lifeless figure, replete with all his worldly possessions, sleeping among them for all to enjoy. If the city is not going to deal with the ”Backpack Brigade” once and for all, you may as well take the eight mil and light cigarettes with it.
