Route 28 closed after Humvee, motor home collide in Chichester

Three people were injured yesterday when a motor home hit a National Guard Humvee on Route 28 in Chichester, the police said.

New Hampshire National Guard Spc. Brendon Hatch was driving the Humvee in a military convoy and was hit by a southbound motor home as he pulled onto Route 28 from Main Street in Chichester about noon yesterday, the police said.

Peter Withum, 48, of Barnstead was driving the motor home and was trapped inside after the crash, the police said. He was transported to Concord Hospital with nonlife threatening injuries after emergency personnel removed him from the motor home.

The police said Debbi Leppanen, 53, of Barnstead was also riding in the motor home. She and Hatch, the 21 year-old Humvee driver, were also transported to the hospital with nonlife- threatening injuries, the police said.

Route 28 was closed for three hours yesterday afternoon. The police said the cause of the accident is still under investigation. Neither the Chichester police nor National Guard officials could be reached for additional information last night.
