Letter: French will work for all

Join us in supporting Barbara French of Henniker, Democratic candidate for state representative in Merrimack County District 6.

French understands that government works best when it treats all of its citizens with respect, compassion and equality. After two years of watching the Republican-led insanity of Speaker Bill O’Brien, we’ve seen women’s reproductive rights and access to medical services curtailed, drastic funding cuts for our public universities and support programs that help those in need of mental or physical health services, and workers rights imperiled. We’ve also seen onerous and unnecessary voter ID laws passed with the sole goal of preventing people from voting.

Due to her experience as a nurse, educator and past state representative from 1992-2010, French understands the need for quality health care and education for all New Hampshire residents. She understands that health-care rights must not be restricted by age, gender or pre-existing conditions and will fight to protect Medicaid and Medicare.

She also understands that for the state to thrive in the future, we must demand more education, not less. She will support public kindergarten and adequate funding of public and higher education.

French recognizes that government has an essential role to play in all our lives. The issue is not “small” versus “big” government, but whether or not government works best to provide for the common welfare of its citizens. French will work tirelessly on behalf of all citizens, not just the privileged few.

The most onerous voter ID law ever passed is the United States Constitution. Though the Constitution does not explicitly mention the right to vote, we have spent enormous amounts of time and political resource in amending our Constitution to protect this right to vote. The States have taken great care to insure that all those who are eligible to vote do indeed vote. In this hyper mobile society that we live in today, I see no reason why any American would be against measures taken to insure this precious right. I see no reason any state should be barred from requiring proper identification that insures eligibility. What do we have to gain by having ineligible voters voting right be sides those who are eligible? Ronald Reagan once said (about the Russians when negotiating a nuclear treaty; “Trust but verify.” So while he believed in working with the Russians on the basis of trust, he knew that trust could not be gained without the ability to have transparent verification, on both sides, to demonstrate compliance with the newly signed treaty. I see no reason why this verification should be opposed by anyone.
