Allenstown

Teacher said to grab neck of 7th grader

An Allenstown teacher has been charged with simple assault after the police said he placed his hands around a female student’s neck.

Bernard Ouellette, 67, was put on an unpaid administrative leave yesterday according to district officials, who said the French teacher had been on a paid leave since the Oct. 23 incident at Armand R. Dupont Middle School. Helene Bickford, co-superintendent of SAU 53, said the alleged assault took place in a seventh grade class.

The charge against Ouellete is a Class B Misdemeanor.

Police Chief Shaun Mulholland said Ouellette, who lives in Hampton, was not trying to strangle the student, a crime that would have led to a felony level charge. He said the teacher was not provoked and was not angry at the student at the time but declined to discuss the incident further.

Helene Bickford, co-superintendent of SAU 53, said Ouellette has taught at the school for about
7 years.

In a press release the town’s school board said Ouellette will remain on leave until the criminal matter is settled.

The Monitor was unable to reach Ouellette yesterday evening.
