Hopkinton to ask voters for highway garage funds at special town meeting tonight
Special town meeting on garage tonight
Hopkinton will hold a special town meeting tonight where voters will be asked to approve a $1.3 million bond for the construction of a new highway garage.
The town’s selectmen had hoped to replace the destroyed highway garage, which burned down in a June fire, with insurance funds. But the town’s insurer, the Local Government Center, has offered to pay only $738,000 on the building, which it had valued at $1 million, according to the selectmen.
Hoping to not further delay construction, the selectmen say they would like to borrow money for the building and then pay back the bond with the insurance payout, once the two sides reach an agreement.
Jim O’Brien, chairman of the board of selectmen, said he expects the town will be able to construct a new garage for about $1 million, but the town is looking to get a $1.3 million bond because the exact cost has not been set.
The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the middle/high s chool auditorium.
