Letter: Reduce the number of guns

Why are people required to have practical and theoretical training and have to pass a test to drive a car? Surely a car is not as lethal as guns. So why not have a similar system for gun use?

It is clear and proved that the number of deaths from guns is directly related to the number of guns in a country. Until the number of guns is reduced, the killing will continue.

Why do ordinary people in the United States need assault weapons and multiple round cartridges? Let those lethal weapons be restricted to licensed gun clubs where they can be used under strict supervision of responsible people. Clearly, some people get a kick out of using them, so let them play in secure surroundings.

The rights of individuals are not superior to the rights of the victims. Both should have an equal chance to live out their lives.

And since you're so convinced it's the number of guns that correlates directly with the number of gun deaths - why don't you zoom that microscope in a bit and look at our country in segments regarding your above claim. For instance you might compare . . . schools, malls, movie theaters, etc with gun ranges, the woods on opening day or rifle season, etc in regards to your "more guns around = more gun deaths" claim. Or you could do a state-by-state comparison, such as . . . Michigan, Maryland, Illinois . . . compared to . . . Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine.

You think a car isn't as lethal as a gun? Then why are more people killed "by cars" than by guns in this country? I say ban those cars! Well, at least it will help if we ban alcohol and cell phones, right? People, stop focusing on the tools used rather than the responsible individuals.
