Letter: Reclaim our democracy
Our country is in crisis. Our democracy is being bought the same way an investment is purchased and this is not a partisan issue; the entire population of this country, save a small 1 percent, is having its voice in politics stolen by massive corporate donations and political action committees.
A sickening statistic it that President Obama’s campaign spent over $919.3 million dollars and Mitt Romney received $885.6 million for the 2012 election. Much of this money has come from corporations and super PACs which funnel “dark money” into the political processes. Dark money is money that comes from an unknown source which means, without disclosure, you have no idea who is buying your candidate.
The threat is not that elections can be bought, but when people like Sheldon Adelson give huge donations they exert influence over policymakers and this guides legislation. We should be terrified of the future and the fact that large donors can anonymously control the people we elect. Super PACs, unions, and large businesses all have far more influence than you or me.
The democracy we live in no longer listens to the 99 percent; it only works to satisfy the interests of those with billions. Whether you lean to the left or the right, we can truly all come together to challenge this issue and reclaim our democracy through transparency and discloser.
