Letter: Newtown killings were not a one-time thing
Everyone acknowledges that the killings at Newtown are tragic. For the time being, many folks are talking about action to reduce or eliminate such events in the future. But life will sooner or later draw our immediate attention from keeping this important issue in the forefront of discussion, planning and action.
Several news organizations have been daily posting a running tally of all those killed by guns in the United States since that terrible day – just to remind us that this is not a one-time thing.
I urge the Monitor and all your publications begin a similar practice. A better statistic would be to show all those shot and all those killed as separate indicators of how pervasive this plague on our society actually is. Please continue this for at least 12 months.
