New England College student competes for Miss America

A New England College student and Gilford High School graduate will compete this weekend to become Miss America.

Megan Lyman graduated from Gilford High School and is now a junior at New England College, according to the Miss America website. Lyman is studying elementary and special education, New England College said in a press release. The 21-year-old hopes to pursue a master’s degree in special education and become a school administrator. Lyman was named Miss New Hampshire last year, and will participate in the Miss America contest Saturday.

On the Miss America website, Lyman lists her talent as tap dancing and her platform issue as the Make-a-Wish Foundation. In a video on the website, she stands to the top of Mount Washington and talks about her own battle against childhood cancer.

The contestants who receive the most online votes will participate as finalists. For more information, visit missamerica.org.

The competition will air live from Las Vegas on ABC at 9 p.m. on Saturday.
