Empty Weare house destroyed by fire; no injuries reported

An unoccupied house in Weare owned by Town Administrator Naomi Bolton burned to the ground Sunday night. No one was injured.

The building, at 58 Norris Road, caught fire about 8 p.m.

Bolton and her husband, who live down the street, were the first to arrive at the scene after noticing the flames from their home. The fire department was right behind them after receiving a call about a brush fire near South Stark Highway. When they arrived at the scene, they saw the fire was actually at the nearby Norris Road property, a two-story house that was almost fully collapsed.

It took about four hours to put out the fire, and the cause is still being investigated, said Weare fire Chief Robert Vezina.

Bolton and her husband, William, purchased the property in May. William grew up on the street, and the two built a home across from his parents’ house 30 years ago, Bolton said. They purchased the 58 Norris Road house, with a 40-acre piece of property, when its owner decided to move to Florida. The house was still furnished from the previous owner and everything inside was destroyed, Bolton said.

The Boltons also own a small property between their home and the house that burned down. They purchased the property as a future investment, as the street is important to them because of family history.

“There’s a lot of memories,” Bolton said. “It means a lot to us. We wouldn’t have bought the little (property) and the larger one next to us if it didn’t mean a lot to us.”

The Boltons didn’t have a concrete plan for what they would do with the house, but had started trimming trees and cleaning up the property this weekend.

“I guess you stand there kind of shocked,” Bolton said about her reaction to the fire. “After spending the weekend working around it and stuff, it’s hard to envision it’s gone from 4 p.m. when (we) left.”

The Goffstown, New Boston, Henniker and Dunbarton fire departments assisted at the scene.
