Letter: Lost in translation

Re “Does the ‘n-word’ belong in the Monitor?” (Opinion page, Jan. 22):

In reference to Editor Felice Belman’s column regarding the use of the “n-word,” I wish to mention a navigation hazard off the Maine Coast consisting of boulders that resemble the heads of persons of color swimming in the water. The 18th-century term for these rocks were “Niggerheads.” I noticed that navigation charts of the 1960s had changed the name to “Negro Heads.” I have not seen more recent maps of the waters, but has the name since been changed to “Black Heads” and later to “African-American Heads?” Something gets lost in the translation.
