5 Questions: ‘Great Balls of Fire’ challenge at Loudon restaurant
Consuming a plateful of mountain oysters drenched in flaming hot sauce might not sound like the ideal way to prepare for Sunday’s big game, but you might change your mind if you consider it is for a good cause. The “Great Balls of Fire” challenge, which begins at 4 p.m. at the Hungry Buffalo Restaurant in Loudon, is open to any brave soul with an intrepid stomach and $10 in their pocket. Half the proceeds go to the local food pantry, and half go for prize money, said owner Jim Kersch.
What is the challenge? Everyone gets a plateful of the mountain oysters soaked in hot sauce and whoever finishes theirs first wins.
How hot is “hot”? Extremely hot. This is a new house blend that we just created last fall.
How many times have you done this? We’ve offered it informally to customers for a few months now, but this will be the first annual Super Bowl challenge. The difference here is there won’t be a time limit. We want someone to walk away a winner.
How many people have succeeded at the restaurant version? None.
Did any get close? We had one gentleman who we thought was going to finish, but a little over a minute in he started hiccuping and sweating profusely, and finally had to ask for the milk.
