Report to Readers: Why not take the kids?

Even before they were married, it was clear that Dan and Danielle Barrick had at least one big thing in common: a real curiosity about all things New Hampshire, their adopted state.

The Barricks are former Monitor colleagues. We miss them here! But I’m happy to report that at least once a month, they’re making a return, starting this Sunday.

Careful readers of the Monitor will remember Dan as a terrific reporter on everything from the FRM Ponzi scheme scandal to the tenure of former governor Craig Benson to summertime life on Lake Sunapee. His wife, whom you might have known as Danielle Kronk, had a variety of big jobs here: assistant city editor for the Monitor, first editor of the weekly Concord Insider, even head of the advertising department. These days, Dan is deputy director of the New Hampshire Center for Public Policy Studies. Danielle handles public relations for the UNH School of Law.

But they are also the parents of two young children – and that’s where their return to the Monitor comes in.

Starting Sunday, the Barricks will be writing a monthly column on day trips for families with young children. Most will be an easy drive from Concord. Occasionally they’ll venture into Vermont or Massachusetts for something especially worth the trip. The idea is to expose kids to all sorts of things that are also fun for their parents. You’ll find the column on the front of the Sunday Monitor Your Life section.

Their first trip was to Manchester. Though the column is aimed at parents, there is useful information for readers of all ages. (Here’s one suggestion from Sunday’s column I hadn’t heard of before: a trip to the Spice Center, one of Manchester’s best international grocery stores. Surely a 46-year-old could enjoy that as much as a toddler!)

What will help the writers is feedback from their readers.

If you’ve been someplace terrific – and unlikely – with your kids, let them know about it. If you’re wondering how to make a fun day out of a drive to Keene or Franconia, ask away. If you test their suggestions, let them know how it goes.

As always, let us know what you think.
