Breaking News: Concord to shut off water on part of North Main Street tonight

A leaking water main will cause water to be shut off tonight along part of North Main Street.

Starting at 10 p.m., buildings on North Main Street between School Street and Hills Avenue will have no water service, said General Services Director Chip Chesley.

A water leak was discovered this week in front of Joe King’s Shoe Shop when city employees noticed water on the surface of the street, Chesley said.

“The water basically bubbled up to the surface so we knew that there was a problem,” he said.

Today, crews are pumping water from the excavated area. The leak came from a repair clamp that Chesley said was installed in 1994 on a pipe that dates to 1892.

“What we’re doing right now is keeping the bottom of the trench dry,” Chesley said. “There is some water that’s bubbling out of the pipe into the trench.”

One lane of southbound traffic is closed, but traffic can still travel in both directions on Main Street.

Temporary lights will be installed tonight to complete the repair work.

Water will be restored tomorrow morning, Chesley said. He did not know what time the work will be completed.

“There’s a trench already excavated there . . . so we’ll need to backfill the trench and repair the pavement tomorrow during the day (tomorrow),” Chesley said.

Congratulations! 1892 is the year Sierra Club was organized - and their office is on that block in NH. what a funny coincidence!
