In the summer of 2011, Laura Clark and Jennifer Crowell realized there were no fitness classes or peer support groups for people with quadriplegia like themselves. They started brainstorming and eventually came up with what is now known as Wheelchair Health in Motion. They recently brought their eight-week program, which includes the fitness classes as well as group discussions and wellness information, to HealthSouth in Concord. The participants in their classes see it as a great way to meet and spend time with people who are in similar situations. They also say that the exercises help them build and maintain strength for day-to-day activities. Clark and Crowell worked with a rehab technician to come up with the exercises and basic class structure. They are now working to train peer leaders who will bring the classes to more venues in the future.
