Concord’s tallest redhead will compete in the NBA’s 3-point shootout tonight, and you’re invited to cheer him on at a viewing party at Red River Theatres. You may even get your face on national TV.
TNT will have a camera crew on hand to record local reaction to Bonner’s long-distance attempts from the arc. The shooting contest is part of the NBA’s All-Star Weekend. That Bonner, a San Antonio Spurs forward, is participating at all is the result a social media campaign engineered by his brother Luke.
“Luke Bonner began the movement last month with a tongue-in-cheek letter posted online at FlipCollective.com urging the NBA to choose his sibling,” the Spurs Nation blog reports. “It picked up steam on the internet, particularly on Twitter, where it became known by the ubiquitous hashtag #LetBonnerShoot. Even Kobe Bryant got into the act, dubbing him ‘Red Mamba.’ ”
Bonner will be competing against Indiana’s Paul George, Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving, New York’s Steve Novak, New Orleans’ Ryan Anderson and Golden State’s Stephen Curry.
The shootout will be broadcast at about 9:30 tonight. Red River will be open at 7:30 p.m., with the viewing party scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
Admission is free, but a $5 donation will be suggested at the door. All proceeds benefit the Rock On Foundation, a charity founded by Matt and Luke Bonner that supports athletic, artistic and scholastic initiatives. RSVP at redrivertheatres.org/now-showing/special-events/.
