N.H. House session canceled due to expected snowstorm

Today’s New Hampshire House session has been canceled due to a winter storm that’s threatening to drop a foot or more of wet, heavy snow on parts of the state.

The House had been scheduled to meet today to vote on a proposed 15-cent increase in the gas tax, a proposed 24-hour waiting period for abortions and other bills.

But Speaker Terie Norelli, a Portsmouth Democrat, canceled the session “as a result of safety concerns stemming from forecasts calling for heavy snow and power outages,” according to a news release last night. The National Weather Service yesterday issued a winter storm warning for the region, forecasting 8 to 12 inches of snow in central New Hampshire. The state police warned 6 to 14 inches could fall today, with the heaviest snowfall in central and southern New Hampshire.

The full House will meet next Wednesday, and House committees will meet as scheduled tomorrow. The Senate is on vacation this week and will meet again next Thursday.

The Concord school system only serves students in Concord and only stay open until the mid-afternoon. Concord is not going to be hit as hard as some other parts of the state. The New Hampshire House has members who drive in from all over the state, and there were over 100 bills on the calendar, some of them highly controversial. The session could easily have run well into the evening. As for what the "Maine Governor" said: Paul LePage is not, and never has been, the Speaker of the New Hampshire House. He's not even from New Hampshire. Speaker Bill O'Brien might have been less cautious when deciding whether or not to keep the House in session— but even he canceled the proceedings a few times due to winter weather during his one and only term as Speaker.

Channel 9 did not report that Concord has school today. Rather, Concord schools weren't listed as having closed for the simple reason that it's school vacation week.

I like the way the Maine Governor said it - If the stores are open then the state is open. I'll check the TV for how many ski resorts are closed, their employees have to get to work too...
