Chances are you haven’t seen a rhinoceros on the streets of Concord recently. They aren’t as common as you might think outside a box of animal crackers. But this weekend is your chance to see plenty of them, as NHTI raises the curtain on a production of Rhinoceros, a Eugene Ionesco play in which the residents of a small French town turn into rhinoceroses.

We did catch up with NHTI student Clancy McMahon, who plays the lead character, Berenger, in the performance. Turns out he was destined to be famous from the age of 3!

How long have you been acting/performing? I’ve been acting since I was 3, when I was in a Blue Cross/Blue Shield commercial. That was my first technical gig. My mother’s side of the family has always been into theater, and they kind of got me into it as well.

Have you taken any of the themes of the play to heart? Do you see them in real life around you? One of the reasons I wanted to do this show is because it’s right up my alley. A lot of it is about fascism and thinking for yourself, and that really strikes a chord for me. It’s very current; even though it’s a play from the ’60s, it still rings true.

Did you get in character as a rhinoceros for months beforehand, Daniel Day Lewis style? My character is the only one who doesn’t turn into a rhinoceros, so it was more character work of trying to not turn into one.

Rhinoceros plays in NHTI’s Sweeney Auditorium on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10. For more information, email nsafley@ccsnh.edu.

If you’re looking for something to do tonight, perhaps you should stop by Gibson’s Bookstore for an appearance by Robert Begiebing to discuss his book, The Turner Erotica: A Biographical Novel. The event begins at 7 p.m.
